Really happy that our 360 film STATIC has recently been selected and screened at The Firm Film Festival in Spain recently!

STATIC is a 360 video, ideally viewed on a headset (but can also be watched on mobile or desktop devices, with headphones). The viewer is taken into different evocative spaces; a lonely home, a frantic woodland, an ominous landscape of pylons, floating memories and dancing bears. A BSL interpreter tries, and fails, to communicate the story of the central protagonist, a woman isolated and confined in her home, seeking release.

STATIC was developed out of a year's research with survivors of domestic abuse, but also speaks to the situation many people found themselves in during 2020. Coinciding with the challenges of the pandemic and the major increase in reports of domestic abuse, STATIC is also a work about isolation, mental health, loneliness, the struggles of communication and thwarted impetus.

One of the things that’s been wonderful about being part of A Seat At The Table @phoenix_artspace is thinking about different ways we can activate the space.

There are a number ways people have been able to engage with the exhibition - drawing, writing, poetry and song (at the open mic event) monoprint and lastly through movement.

Yael Flexer of @flexersandiland led a movement session for us, with ten women in the gallery space responding to the exhibition. It offered some fascinating insights into how the body receives information, how you can understand artworks in a different way and retain these memories through a physical engagement.

The group included women from our SHIFT group and members of her Acting Our Age dance group, some of which were part of the group that were involved with LAZY almost a year ago.

It was such a busy night we didn’t take any photos of at the opening of the exhibition last week. We are going to document the exhibition this week but here are a couple of sneak peaks of the exhibition which ends this Sunday and is open from Weds - 11-5.30.

We want to say a big thank you to Jake Parker who we gave the entire remains of the blown up lazyboy chair to (along with some word and image prompts) and he then brilliantly repurposed it into an object which you can see in the second photo and for real in the space.

We hired (at a very reasonable price) 4 beautiful screens for 4 of the 5 videos which are in the exhibition. They are also lovely people and are a such a great company - check them out! We are collaborating with Chris Chowen, Innovation & Technology Manager at Wired Sussex, is to develop an AI / Open Mic event in September. The idea for an open mic event came from one of the @brightonwomenscentre SHIFT collective and one of the group came and helped us test out what images were thrown up by the AI when responding to spoken word and song. Chris tested out different prompts to the AI to see how broad or particular we could make the response….
